The City of Mitchell is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Police Chief due to the retirement of the current Chief. The City is seeking an innovative and collaborative professional with proven managerial and leadership experience, as well as strong interpersonal skills. This individual will administer and direct the functions and personnel of the Police Department. Under supervision of the Mayor, the Police Chief is an integral part of the City’s leadership team and must possess the ability to lead, coach and train staff in a focused and effective manner to support its objectives. About the Department:
The Mitchell Police Department currently consists of (4) full-time and (2) part-time sworn positions. Supporting the Chief of Police is a Sergeant. The Department works closely with local, county, state and federal law enforcement agencies. The Mitchell Police Department remains an active law enforcement agency in western Nebraska. Must possess a high school diploma or GED. At least (3) years’ experience as a supervisory officer in a law enforcement agency. Must be able to react calmly and quickly in case of emergency and to make correct decisions in such cases. Must have proven skills in the use of firearms; knowledge of basic first aid; knowledge of basic computer operation and application to police work; knowledge of state laws, city ordinances and administrative rules and regulations for police departments in Nebraska; knowledge of the types and uses of firearms, communication systems and automotive equipment used in modern police work; must possess or be able to obtain a valid Nebraska driver’s license; must possess or be able to obtain Law Enforcement Certification in the State of Nebraska; Out of state applicants must qualify for a Nebraska Law Enforcement Certification and should consult with the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center website for qualification requirements; ability to keep records and prepare reports; and have the ability to demonstrate an understanding of good fiscal management practices in the handling of departmental budget. Must reside within a 15-minute response area within one year of hire. Must possess good character as determined by a thorough background investigation.
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in criminal justice, police science, law enforcement, public or business administration or a closely related field. Ten years of law enforcement officer experience. Graduation from a state accredited law enforcement training academy with advanced training. The preferred candidate will exceed minimum qualifications.
Pay Range: The entry pay range for this position is $50,000- $65,000 commensurate with experience. The salary range is regionally competitive and dependent upon background and qualifications of the successful candidate. The position includes an excellent fringe benefit package consisting of health, dental, vision and life insurances, vacation and sick leave and a matching retirement of up to 4%.
